The Changing Seasons of Love

The Seven Year Itch - The Changing Seasons of Love

The Collection

Love does not stand still.

Like the changing seasons, every relationship experiences periods of growth, abundance, hardship and renewal. The Seven Year Itch is a collection of seven original oil paintings that follows the emotional journey of a couple through the first seven years of their marriage, revealing the quiet transformations that shape a life shared together.

Painted in oil and ink on premium 300gsm oil paper, each artwork represents a chapter in their story. Beginning with the excitement of new love and the optimism of the honeymoon, the collection moves through the joy of building a family, the challenges of parenthood, emotional distance, uncertainty and, ultimately, the possibility of reconciliation and new beginnings.

Nature provides the language for every stage of the journey. Spring celebrates hope and new life, summer reflects abundance and growth, autumn reveals change and quiet decline, while winter becomes a moment of reflection where love must either be abandoned or nurtured once more. Rich in symbolism, the changing landscape mirrors the changing emotional landscape of the couple themselves.

Each painting is entirely unique, hand painted by Julia O'Sullivan and offered as a one-of-one original artwork. Together, the seven works form a continuous visual narrative that explores one of life's most universal experiences: the evolution of love.

Behind the Collection

Marriage is often spoken about as though it should remain constant, yet real relationships are continually changing. We celebrate the excitement of falling in love, but we speak far less about the seasons that follow—the responsibilities, sacrifices, disappointments and quiet resilience that shape a lifetime together.

I wanted to create a collection that acknowledged these realities without judgement.

The title, The Seven Year Itch, refers to the well-known belief that many relationships face their greatest test after seven years. Rather than focusing on infidelity or failure, I chose to explore the emotional landscape that can lead couples to this crossroads.

Each painting reflects a season in both nature and marriage, illustrating how relationships bloom, mature, falter and, with care, can flourish once again. The final painting offers no definitive ending. Instead, a single bud emerging from the frozen landscape symbolises hope and reminds us that every ending can also become a new beginning.

This collection is a reflection on commitment, resilience and the understanding that love is not sustained by perfection, but by the willingness to keep choosing one another through every changing season.
