THE GODS WERE NEVER PERFECT.

They loved.

They lusted.

They lied.

They betrayed.

They became jealous, angry, vengeful and occasionally spectacularly unreasonable.

And perhaps that is exactly why their stories have survived.

Greek mythology may be filled with gods, monsters, heroes and impossible creatures, but beneath all that immortality lies something remarkably familiar.

Us.

These ancient stories explore love, power, beauty, vanity, temptation, revenge, sacrifice, ambition and the consequences of human desire. The gods may live on Mount Olympus, but their weaknesses belong firmly down here with the rest of us.

That is what fascinated me.

I didn't want simply to paint Greek mythology.

I wanted to get inside the stories, pull apart their symbolism and discover why, thousands of years later, we are still telling them.

Because the costumes may have changed.

Human nature hasn't.

The Harpies

The Story
Emerging from the shadows of ancient mythology, the Harpies take flight as creatures of both beauty and terror. Part woman and part bird, they embody the unpredictable nature of divine punishment—swift, merciless and impossible to escape.
With powerful wings spread against the sky, they descend upon those who have angered the gods, becoming instruments of retribution sent to enforce a justice far beyond human understanding.
Among their most infamous victims is King Phineas, whose betrayal earns him a punishment worse than death. Condemned to an isolated island, he is forced to endure an endless cycle of suffering as the Harpies descend upon him each day, stealing away his food and leaving him trapped between hunger and despair.
His punishment becomes more than physical torment.
It becomes a reminder of his own actions.
His past follows him in the form of creatures that refuse to allow him peace.
When Jason and the Argonauts encounter Phineas during their legendary voyage, they attempt to free him from his torment. Their pursuit of the Harpies leads them to Iris, goddess of the rainbow, who intervenes and offers protection to these feared creatures.
In this moment, mythology reveals its complexity.
Even those who deliver punishment may themselves deserve compassion.
The Harpies are both executioners and victims of their own purpose.
The Symbolism
The Harpies represent the darker side of justice.
Their wings allow them to move freely between worlds, symbolising the connection between humanity and the divine. Yet their monstrous appearance reflects the fear created when justice becomes absolute and without mercy.
Their bird-like nature represents instinct, hunger and relentless pursuit, while their human form reminds us that punishment is not separate from emotion, morality or judgement.
King Phineas represents the weight of guilt and consequence. His endless suffering reflects how our actions can continue to affect us long after the moment has passed.
The stolen food becomes a powerful symbol. It represents not only physical hunger, but the loss of peace, forgiveness and redemption.
The Harpies do not simply take away his meal.
They take away his ability to move beyond his past.
The Meaning
To me, The Harpies explores one of humanity's oldest questions:
What does justice become when it has no compassion?
The desire to punish wrongdoing exists within all societies, yet ancient mythology often reminds us that revenge and justice can become dangerously intertwined.
The Harpies are terrifying because they represent punishment without escape. They force their victims to confront their actions, but they also raise the question of whether endless suffering can ever truly create healing.
Perhaps the greatest punishment is not what others do to us.
Perhaps it is being unable to forgive ourselves.
Behind the Painting
When I painted The Harpies, I was drawn to the complexity of these mythical creatures.
They are often portrayed simply as monsters, but I wanted to explore the deeper meaning behind them. They are not evil in the traditional sense—they are fulfilling a purpose given to them by the gods. They exist because someone must carry out judgement.
But that raises another question.
What happens to those who become the instruments of punishment?
The Harpies themselves are trapped within their role. They are feared, hated and remembered only through the suffering they cause.
Their story becomes a reflection on power, revenge and the consequences of living without mercy.
Like many figures in mythology, they exist between two worlds.
They are both feared and necessary.
Both destroyers and servants of order.
The Harpies remind us that justice is not always beautiful.
Sometimes it arrives with claws, wings and a shadow across the sky.

The Furies

The Story
Born from violence and betrayal, the Furies emerge from one of mythology’s darkest beginnings. Created from the blood of Uranus after his brutal downfall at the hands of Cronus, these ancient goddesses are born from suffering itself—a living embodiment of the pain, anger and desire for justice that follows destruction.
Known as the relentless spirits of vengeance, the Furies exist to punish those who commit the most serious crimes, particularly acts of betrayal, violence and wrongdoing against family and sacred bonds.
Three sisters stand united in their purpose.
Anger burns with uncontrollable fury, her rage a force that cannot be ignored. She represents the primal emotion that rises when injustice has been committed—the fire that demands something must be done.
Jealousy moves through the shadows, influencing hearts and creating division. She represents the destructive power of comparison, resentment and the pain caused by wanting what belongs to another.
Avenger stands as the embodiment of retribution, carrying the weight of judgement and ensuring that those who cause harm are forced to face the consequences of their actions.
Together, they descend into the underworld, serving Hades as guardians of punishment and tormenting the souls who must confront the darkness of their own choices.
Yet the Furies are not simply cruel.
They exist because justice must exist.
The Symbolism
The Furies represent the complicated relationship between justice and revenge.
Their terrifying appearance reflects the fear created when emotions become powerful enough to consume us. Their presence reminds us that anger can begin as a response to injustice but can become destructive when it is allowed to rule without restraint.
Anger represents the fire within us—the instinct to fight against wrongdoing, but also the danger of being consumed by rage.
Jealousy represents the poison of comparison. Unlike physical wounds, jealousy grows quietly, changing how we see others and ourselves.
Avenger represents the desire for balance and accountability. She reflects humanity's need to believe that actions have consequences and that harm cannot simply be ignored.
Together, they reveal that even our pursuit of justice carries a shadow.
The Meaning
To me, The Furies explores one of humanity's most powerful and dangerous emotions:
The desire for revenge.
When someone hurts us, there is a natural urge to see them punished. We want the world to recognise the injustice that has occurred. But mythology reminds us that vengeance can become its own form of suffering.
The Furies ask:
When does justice become revenge?
Their role is necessary, yet their existence is tragic. They are born from violence and spend eternity surrounded by it. They punish destruction while carrying destruction within themselves.
Perhaps the greatest challenge is not seeking justice.
It is finding a way to achieve it without becoming consumed by the very darkness we oppose.
Behind the Painting
When I painted The Furies, I wanted to explore the emotions that exist behind punishment and consequence.
Throughout history, stories have created monsters to represent the parts of humanity we struggle to understand. But the most frightening creatures are often not those that are completely separate from us—they are those that reflect something already living within ourselves.
The Furies are terrifying because we recognise them.
We recognise anger when we feel wronged.
We recognise jealousy when we compare our lives to others.
We recognise the desire for revenge when we have been hurt.
Their story is not simply about punishment in the underworld.
It is about the battles that take place within the human heart.
The Furies remind us that justice without compassion can become cruelty, and anger without control can become destruction.
They are the guardians of consequence.
But they are also a warning.
Because the fire we use to punish others can sometimes consume us first.

Medusa

The Story
Before she became one of mythology's most feared creatures, Medusa was a young woman devoted to the temple of Athena—a symbol of purity, beauty and dedication.
Her life changed forever when Poseidon, god of the sea, violated the sanctuary where she served. In the aftermath, instead of receiving compassion, Medusa became the one punished for an act committed against her.
Athena's anger transformed the maiden into the creature history would come to fear.
Her beautiful hair became a mass of twisting serpents. Her appearance became terrifying rather than admired, and her gaze gained a deadly power—the ability to turn anyone who looked upon her into stone.
Yet beneath the monstrous exterior remained the pain of the woman she once was.
Medusa became a guardian of the edge of the underworld, standing alongside her Gorgon sisters as a figure of fear and isolation. Those who approached her saw only the danger she represented, never the suffering that created her.
Eventually, the hero Perseus was sent to claim her head. Armed with gifts from the gods and guided by strategy rather than direct confrontation, he defeated Medusa by avoiding her deadly gaze and severing her head.
But even in death, Medusa's story did not end.
From her blood emerged Chrysaor, a warrior of legend, and Pegasus, the magnificent winged horse—a symbol of freedom, imagination and transcendence.
From destruction came creation.
From suffering came something extraordinary.
The Symbolism
Medusa represents transformation born from trauma.
The snakes replacing her hair symbolise the way pain can change how the world sees us. Something that once represented beauty becomes something others fear, reflecting how suffering can reshape identity.
Her gaze, capable of turning people to stone, represents the power of hurt that remains frozen in time. It asks whether we become trapped by what has happened to us, or whether we can transform our pain into something meaningful.
The stone figures surrounding Medusa represent those who judge without understanding. They see only the monster, never the story behind her transformation.
Her wings and serpentine form create a contradiction—both beautiful and terrifying. She exists between victim and monster, human and myth, vulnerability and power.
The birth of Pegasus from her blood is perhaps the greatest symbol within the painting. It represents the possibility that something beautiful can emerge from the darkest experiences.
The Meaning
To me, Medusa is not a story about a monster.
It is a story about what happens when suffering changes the way the world sees us.
Medusa's tragedy is not simply that she became feared.
It is that the world forgot who she was before.
The myth asks difficult questions:
Who decides who is the villain?
How often do we judge the surface without understanding the pain beneath?
And can something broken become something powerful?
Medusa reminds us that transformation is not always beautiful at first. Sometimes it is born from anger, grief and survival.
But even from the darkest moments, new possibilities can emerge.

When I painted Medusa, I was drawn to the tragedy hidden beneath the legend.
For centuries she has been portrayed as a monster whose head is displayed as a trophy. But beneath that image is a story of injustice, betrayal and transformation.
I wanted to explore the woman behind the myth.
The snakes are not simply symbols of horror—they represent the armour she develops after suffering. Her frightening appearance becomes both her curse and her protection, a shield against a world that has already harmed her.
The most powerful part of Medusa's story is that her pain does not erase her ability to create.
From her death comes Pegasus.
From her suffering comes something capable of flight.
Perhaps that is why her story continues to endure.
Because many people know what it feels like to be changed by something they never chose.
And perhaps the greatest act of defiance is not remaining untouched by what happened to us.
It is discovering what we can become because we survived it.

Behind the Collection

I have always been drawn to stories that give me something to unravel.

Greek mythology certainly does that.

These aren't neat little tales with a convenient moral waiting at the end. They are complicated, contradictory and often completely outrageous. Gods behave badly. Heroes are flawed. Love can be destructive. Beauty can be dangerous. A punishment can be worse than the crime, and nobody is guaranteed a happy ending simply because they deserve one.

For an artist like me, that is irresistible.

I don't approach mythology as something sacred that has to be faithfully reproduced. The original story is my starting point. I research it, pull it apart and then begin looking for the symbols, emotions and ideas that interest me.

What would this story look like through my eyes?

That is when it starts to become mine.

The ancient characters remain, but the imagery begins to change. Symbolism creeps in. Ideas collide. Sometimes there is humour, sometimes darkness, and often there is more going on in the painting than you notice at first glance.

Because I don't really paint gods and monsters.

I paint human nature wearing their faces.

Reimagining the Myths

Every painting in this collection begins with a story that has survived for thousands of years.

But I am not interested in simply showing you what happened.

I want to explore why it happened, what it represents and why we still recognise ourselves within it.

Mythology gives me an extraordinary visual playground. Gods can become symbols. Monsters can represent fears. Beauty can disguise danger. Transformation can become freedom or punishment, and the smallest detail can completely change how a story is read.

That allows me to take something ancient and make it feel alive again.

Look closely at these paintings.

There is usually another story hiding inside the story.

This is Greek mythology, retold through my imagination.

Each artwork is individually conceived, researched and created as an original piece rather than as an illustration of the traditional myth.
