Art is where stories, emotions and human experiences collide

For me, art has never been simply about creating something beautiful. It is about asking questions, exploring the unseen, and uncovering the stories that often remain hidden beneath the surface.

I am Julia O’Sullivan, a contemporary artist based in Wales, working across oil painting, sculpture, and mixed media. My work is driven by a fascination with human nature — our struggles, our triumphs, our fears, our beliefs, and the experiences that shape who we become.

Every piece I create begins with a story.

Whether exploring ancient mythology, Welsh heritage, mental health, morality, or the complexities of human emotion, I immerse myself in research before bringing an idea to life. I believe that art has the power to challenge perceptions, encourage conversations, and create connections between people and experiences that may otherwise remain misunderstood.

Exploring the human condition through art

Many of my collections explore the hidden worlds within us.

My mental health sculpture series, The Disorderly Demise of the Cerebral Cortex, was created as a tribute to those living with mental health conditions and to the people who support them. Through seven sculptural heads representing different experiences — including anxiety, addiction, bipolar disorder, dementia, depression, dissociative identity disorder, and schizophrenia — I sought to move beyond labels and reveal the emotional realities behind them.

These works explore not just the conditions themselves, but the thoughts, fears, memories, and inner battles that are often invisible to the outside world. Through symbolism and metaphor, I invite viewers to look deeper and see the person beyond the diagnosis.

My Seven Deadly Sins Collection continues this exploration of human nature, examining temptation, morality, and the choices that shape our lives. Inspired by historical and religious concepts but viewed through a contemporary lens, the collection questions whether these ancient ideas still hold relevance in today’s society.

For me, the greatest stories are often found within our own contradictions — our ability to create and destroy, love and hurt, resist and surrender.

Celebrating Welsh history, mythology and identity

Living in Wales has deeply influenced my work. Its landscapes, legends, language, and history are woven into my creative process.

My monumental sculpture Emrys — The Great Welsh Dragon was created as a celebration of Welsh identity, bringing together mythology, craftsmanship, and cultural heritage. Inspired by the stories of Wales and the symbolism of the national dragon, the sculpture honours the people, industries, landscapes, and legends that have shaped the nation.

Through sculpture, I aim to preserve stories that deserve to be remembered — connecting the past with the present and creating works that allow future generations to engage with Welsh heritage in a new way.

The process behind the artwork

My work is a journey of discovery.

I often spend months or even years researching, designing, sculpting, painting, and refining each piece. Every material has a purpose, every texture carries meaning, and every detail is carefully considered.

I am drawn to combining traditional craftsmanship with contemporary ideas — using oil paint, sculptural forms, metalwork, and mixed media to create immersive artworks that encourage viewers to pause and reflect.

I want my work to create a moment of connection: a feeling, a question, or perhaps a new understanding.

Art as a conversation

The most rewarding part of being an artist is knowing that a piece can continue its story long after it leaves my studio.

Art allows us to explore difficult subjects, celebrate extraordinary stories, and see the world from another perspective. Whether a work evokes emotion, sparks curiosity, or challenges an existing belief, its purpose is to begin a conversation.
