Fairy Tales Reimagined

The Shadows Beneath the Stories

Six Paintings. Familiar Stories. Much Darker Questions.

YOU KNOW THE FAIRY TALES.

OR AT LEAST, YOU THINK YOU DO.

Princesses. Witches. Wolves. Towers. Magic beans. Happily ever after.

But strip away the sparkle and these stories become something very different.

Long before fairy tales were softened for children's bedrooms, they were stories of danger, temptation, betrayal, punishment, survival and consequence.

And that is the part that interests me.

Fairy Tales Reimagined is a collection of six original oil paintings that digs beneath the familiar stories and looks at what they were really trying to tell us.

These are not illustrations.

I was never interested in simply painting the story we already know.

I wanted to find the moment where the story becomes human.

The temptation.

The decision.

The mistake.

The escape.

The awakening.

The price that has to be paid.

Because underneath the castles, forests, princesses and monsters are emotions we still recognise perfectly well today.

Fear.

Desire.

Jealousy.

Trust.

Greed.

Love.

Freedom.

Survival.

Perhaps that is why these stories have refused to disappear.

They were never really about magic.

They were about us.

Behind the Collection

As children, we are taught to see fairy tales one way.

Good defeats evil.

Princesses are rescued.

Wolves are dangerous.

Witches are wicked.

Heroes win.

And eventually everyone lives happily ever after.

But the older I became, the more interesting the cracks in those stories became.

Was Little Red Riding Hood simply a story about a wolf — or about innocence, trust and deception?

Is Rapunzel only waiting to be rescued, or is hers a story about captivity and the desperate need for freedom?

Does Sleeping Beauty simply wake up — or does awakening itself become the important part of the story?

And what exactly are we supposed to make of Jack?

He steals from the giant, destroys his home and ultimately kills him.

Hero?

Thief?

Survivor?

Perhaps all three.

That ambiguity is where these paintings began.

I wanted to take stories we think we understand and disturb them slightly.

To look beyond the familiar characters and ask what sits underneath them.

Because fairy tales have always contained warnings.

Don't trust too easily.

Be careful what you wish for.

Freedom often comes at a price.

Beauty can deceive.

Curiosity can be dangerous.

Power can corrupt.

And monsters are not always the creatures we expect them to be.

Each painting takes one of these familiar tales and rebuilds it through my own visual language, using symbolism, atmosphere and narrative to push beyond the surface of the story.

You may recognise the tale immediately.

But I hope you don't leave the painting quite as certain about what it means.

Why Fairy Tales?

Because they survive.

Stories change. Cultures change. Generations change.

Yet we continue telling these same tales.

That fascinates me.

Something inside them continues to speak to us.

Perhaps it is because fairy tales allow us to explore the darker parts of being human from a safe distance.

We can put fear into a wolf.

Jealousy into a queen.

Danger into a forest.

Captivity into a tower.

Temptation into a handful of magic beans.

And suddenly something complicated becomes a story we can understand.

But the symbolism remains.

The wolf never really disappears.

Neither does the tower.

We just give them different names.

That is what this collection explores.

Not simply what these stories once meant.

But why, hundreds of years later, we still recognise ourselves inside them.

The Collection

Six original oil paintings reinterpret familiar fairy tales through symbolism, psychology and contemporary observation.

Each painting concentrates on a pivotal moment within its story rather than attempting to illustrate the entire tale.

Look closely.

The obvious story is only the beginning.

Original Paintings Available

Until fairly recently, I was in no particular hurry to sell my original paintings.

I have lived with many of them for years.

But the collection has grown, the studio has become increasingly full, and the time has come for some of these works to find homes of their own.

At present, all six paintings in the Fairy Tales Reimagined collection are available to purchase individually.

Once an original is sold, there will never be another original painting of that work.
